Tomato enriched with folic acid has been created by U.S researchers which they claim can bring down folate deficiency-linked and anemia problems and birth rate defects in developing countries. This super tomato has served as a good model for the scientists and they are ready to implement this strategy in the case of tuber crops and cereals. It has been found out that folate deficiency leads to birth defects and is also associated with heart diseases and cancer. In U.S. now grains are being fortified with folic acid and pregnant women are being recommended folate supplements. Since folic acid supplies can be difficult in less developed countries therefore genetically engineered crops can help in preventing the deficiencies. It ix expected that super tomato would go a long way in lowering birth defect rates in developing countries.
