It is expected that Romania might be kicked out from the EU markets and even face difficulties in selling their GM products locally as it is delaying in complying with European food traceability and labeling regulations. Another thing is that Romania has increased the use of GM crops that might hinder organic agriculture. It must be noted that organic agriculture is an area where Romania has the potential of competing in the EU market. Romania has become the single largest producer of GM soybeans in Europe this year. Most of the crop was planted without any certified seeds but now the government is making efforts for bringing food production standards in line with the environmental rules of EU and has also started monitoring of GM crops.
