Biotechnology as a science has a lot to contribute to human beings and is being labeled as one of the most exciting sciences in this century. GM crops have been found out to contribute a lot towards increasing productivity in the field of agriculture and it is due to biotechnology that GM crops under plantation has increased from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 90 million hectares in 2005.

These crops are pests and virus resistant, herbicide tolerant and have a better nutritional value. Efforts are being made to create GM crops which can survive in the poorest food producing areas.

Techniques such as micro-propagation are being used to produce better quality plants and scientists are trying to produce crops which have high yield, are disease resistant and can also survive pest attacks. It is bound to benefit the mankind and plant biotechnology which is a combination of a number of sciences such as microbiology, genetics, pharmacology, plant breeding and a host of other disciplines is set to turn around the field of agriculture.
