hybrid-embryo_50Some researchers want to blend human and animal cells so as to formulate a source of stem cells that would combat human diseases. But the government has called for a ban to any such projects because of ‘public unease’.

According to the idea, genetic material would be extracted from humans and introduce into a host animal egg to create hybrid embryos.

It has been anticipated that the formed stem cells would be able to counter Alzheimer’s or motor neurone disease.

Supporters of the research have postulated that if any kind of ban would pass then the researchers would look for some other ‘regime’ that would nourish their study.

Committee member Evan Harris said,

Ministers have never provided a rational basis for their ban and their only supporters are pro-life groups and anti-science campaigners who oppose all embryo research.

Dr Vivienne Nathanson, head of science and ethics at the British Medical Association, said the law already prevented such embryos being placed in a woman and there was a robust mechanism for regulating individual research projects.

Presently, the researchers are waiting for the public opinion on this which is due next month.

Since, it projects no harm, scientist must not be discouraged in preparing an organ which is useful to human life.
