The demand for ethanol is increasing and so is the demand for corn in U.S. As a result American farmers are increasing the plantation of corn on a massive scale which might lead to shortage of some of the popular biotech hybrid seeds. Now corn is replacing cotton plantation as some of the corn prices have doubled in the past year. It is expected to cause shortage in biotech varieties of corn which are herbicide resistant and corn borer.

Increasing pressure on exiting energy sources has caused a tremendous increase in the demand for alternative fuel such as ethanol and it is expected that farmers could improve the supply of corn by thirty nine billion pounds in the first decade of plantation of biotechnology derived crops. This is expected to give a boost to the U.S. biotechnology market and enable it to achieve further growth.
