So, now human proteins can be grown on plants! Yes, the United States has received the preliminary approval to grow genetically modified rice, which is capable of producing human protein. The scientists will be producing the genes contained in human breast milk in a new genetically modified rice. Its commercial production is scheduled to begin later this year. Such ‘plant-grown human gene’ would be used in medicines for fighting diarrhoea, dehydration and other ailments that kill a large number of infants each year. Keeping aside the excitement of the scientists with their new achievement, have they taken into consideration, the fact that – such a rice crop can contaminate other crops and also possibly harm human health? Bill Freeze from the US Centre for Food Safety claims, I’m really concerned about this because I think there’s, one, the potential for this rice to get into the food supply, and two, it hasn’t been tested, it hasn’t gone through a drug review process. So we’re dealing with an unknown here, something that could cause harm to human health.
