Genetically engineered rice or GE rice has been facing global rejection and a number of countries across continents have vowed to ban this variety of rice. All this negative reaction is the result of the contamination incident which occurred in 2006 when world’s supply of rice was contaminated with an illegal variety of GE rice which was developed by Bayer.

The company has been pursuing approvals for its GE rice worldwide but has shamelessly refused to accept any responsibility for the financial damages caused by this form of rice.

Jeremy Tager, Greenpeace International rice campaigner stated:

This global contamination and global market rejection of GE rice clearly shows the need for Bayer to withdraw from any further GE rice development. Bayer proves that GE rice is too risky. Through field trials alone Bayer caused massive financial damage to the global rice industry. The commercial growing of GE rice must never become a reality; the impact on the world’s most important food crop world be disastrous.

The company is probably not accepting its responsibility since if it does it would have to pay a lot of money in financial damages which could break its bone but why did it indulge in all these illegal activities on the first count? An answer to this can solely be offered by Bayer itself.
