Nanotechnology has been utilized by immunologists at the Kimmel Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University for creating a novel biosensor in order to find an answer to a problem troubling the field of immunology- ‘how immune system cells called killer T-cells hunt down invading viruses.’ It was found out that little virus could turn on the killer T-cells due to communication among antigen presenting proteins which recognized and attached to the virus and hence made it visible to the immune system. In order to understand in a proper manner as to how proteins are recognized by killer T-cells a biosensor was created by Dr. Sykulev and his team out of semiconductor nanoparticles referred to as quantum dots.
