Rice growers had filed a suite against Bayer after traces of unapproved genetically modified rice was founded in long grain rice in Missouri and Arkansas. This had led to Japan banning certain strains of American rice which caused the prices of harvested rice to fall. The rice being referred here is the LL-RICE-601 which is said to contain a gene which makes rise resistant to herbicide liberty. In response to the suit the company stated that it had developed a variety of GM rice but declined marketing it to farmers. Up till now the company has shunned all the allegations. Let’s see what happens next. GM seeds have been creating furor not only in America but also in other parts of the world and until and unless the respective governments come out with some concrete plan to tackle it this debate would continue.
