Yale researchers identify autism gene

Fred Volkmar, an autism expert along with his team at the Yale School of Medicine has been able to successfully identify a gene and region of a chromosome which causes autism in case of children. The study is based on the largest ever autism genome scan and more than hundred and twenty scientists conducted the research. The research dates back to 2002 when researchers decided to share their data and expertise in identification of autism susceptibility genes. The research was conducted under the Autism Genome Project and these are the first phase preliminary findings. Gene chip technology was deployed for finding out genetic similarities in the case of autistic individuals besides scanning up of DNA for searching copy number variations. Researchers feel that there might be five or six major genes and thirty other genes which were responsible for autism and in case a child had these genes then there was a high chance for the child being born with severe form of the disease.
