Insomnia drug proves beneficial in brain function improvement

A drug used for treating insomnia called zolpidem can help in improving the brain function of patient suffering from akinetic mutism temporarily. Under this type of condition though the person is alert but can neither move nor speak. After administering the drug the patient was able to walk, communicate and eat without any assistance. When the patient was administered with the drug she was able to perform some of the functions for around three hours and when all the medication was withdrawn one by one it was found out that zolpidem was responsible for the positive effect. This is being labeled as the first study which has been able to assess the impact of zolpidem on post anoxic brain injury with the aid of modern methodological standards of clinical pharmacology. If it turns out to be successful then it could go a long way in improving brain functioning in millions of patients around the world.
