Plant Biotechnology Benefits Argentina Farmers

Here is an example where biotechnology has helped farmers in Argentina to increase their farm’s productivity. The trend of planting GM crops started in 1996 and in the year 2005 itself around seventeen million hectares of land was sown with GM cotton, corn and soybean. Farmers have not only experienced savings in costs but also increase in their income from their farmland. Due to biotechnology farmers have been able to adopt no till or reduced tillage system and have been able to cultivate two crops in a season. The benefits are immense. Few pesticides are being employed, even the growth of weed has come down and the consumption of herbicides has been reduced by half. With the adoption of biotechnology Argentina has become world’s second largest producer of GM crops.
